Jonni Darkko is too nice a guy to be the newest and hottest property at Evil Angel. He feels the industry is littered with “circus acts,” in his words. He claims he’s too old for gangbangs and has little interest in seeing a bunch of nut sacks obscuring a sexy lady.
Darkko recently left New Sensations for a contract at Evil Angel, perhaps the hottest porn company ever to spread a butt cheek, and though he feels the industry is getting too degrading, that doesn’t mean he won’t be brining his trademark anal action into the fold.
With some interactive ideas for the future of porn and a technical expertise to actually fulfill the ambition of his vision, Darkko may be the industry’s great wipe hope. When he sat down to chew the fat with Sex Wrecks, the conversation ranged from porn chicks who fake their lesbian scenes to why he won’t go in front of the camera.

First of all, did you get your name from that Jake Gyllenhaal movie?
Yeah. I was trying to come up with a name when I started directing for New Sensations. I was away on holiday for Christmas two years ago and was watching Donnie Darko and I love the movie so much. I got to come up with something that’s kind of kitschy but not stupid. So many of these porn names are just retarded. So I just took my name and the Darkko name.
It’s funny because I ran into Jake Gyllenhaal last year.
Does he know of your work?
I usually keep a stash of porn in my car and it was Christmas Eve at Whole Foods in Hollywood and he was with Kirsten Dunst. He walked right by me and I didn’t even recognize him. Then I heard his voice, and I’m like, “Oh, that’s Jake!” I walked right up to him, but I waited until Kirsten Dunst walked away. I didn’t want to freak her out, you know, “Oh, this porno creepy guy.”
I go, “Hey, man, I’m a big fan. I love your work. I love Donnie Darko, such a huge movie. I’m a porn director and I named myself after your character.” And he was like, “Really?” I go, “Yeah, look it up online. I usually keep movies with me, but I don’t have anything, but I’d love to hook you up with some.” At that time I didn’t have a card. It was Christmas Eve, I didn’t have shit on me! But it was cool. Maybe he looked me up online or not.
How did you get into the porn business?
I’d been doing stills for the business for a good six years. I was a fashion photographer in Chicago before I moved. I kind of got into this business because I moved out here and I couldn’t land any huge accounts and the people I had out in Chicago didn’t want to travel out here to keep my account.
A friend told me, “Why don’t you check out porn? You work everyday, make so much money.” I checked it out and I was surprised at how well it worked and started making stills for all the major companies.
One day I was doing stills for New Sensations. The owner of the company was directing a scene and said, “I really need a good cameraman. Do you know of any?” “How about me?” “Well, what have you done?” I showed him a couple things I had been working on and he let me finish the scene that he was shooting, and then in ten minutes he basically asked me what I wanted to do and I was hired.
I directed fulltime for New Sensations for a year and then John Stagliano called and asked to talk to me and he offered me a deal right then and there.
Do you have any desire to place yourself in front of the camera?
No, it’s not my deal. I’m forty and I’m white.
John Stagliano says you possess superior technical skills as a director and cameraman, so how does that play into making a hotter porn feature?
I don’t really think of it that way. It’s just ability; it’s not that I’m better than anybody else. I think that being a still photographer for twelve years really helps give me an eye for shots. What I do probably is better than somebody else who hasn’t had that experience. I set up shots. I get specific angles that I think are interesting and draw interest. I do composition really well. I think I transcend that field a little bit. Whipping things together and hoping it comes out, I really don’t believe in that. I think that’s what makes me a little bit more unique.
You’ve been described as the king of gonzo. So what makes a good gonzo flick?
That’s a heavy question, because it all depends on so many different people’s opinions. I personally, I’m not a big fan of what’s happening now in the industry. I think it’s all turned into a real circus act of undesirable sex. I don’t want to watch five or six guys fuck a girl. It doesn’t turn me on. For some people, they might want to see that. But for me, it’s got to do a little bit with my age, but I’m over watching gangbangs and shit. I think it’s ridiculous.
For me, what makes a good gonzo movie is sexual intensity, sensuality in the woman. She has to be beautiful and sexy. I don’t really shoot young-girl stuff. I don’t really do that wayward girl trying to be a star kind of thing. I want women to be women. I think my sexual fantasies are more along that line. But I think it’s all to the person.
I’ve read that you film only what turns you on. So what kind of stuff won’t be in one of your features?
I’ve done a couple DPs, or double penetrations, but I really don’t do a whole lot of that. It’s not sexy. I do all that anal and all that good stuff, but I won’t do gangbangs. The circus-show acts I don’t care to do.
Do you think that porn has gotten too violent and misogynistic?
Definitely. Violent, maybe not violent, but overly degrading. I don’t think violence is really happening that much. There are people smacking girls around, which is ridiculous, but those girls put themselves in those positions. They can stop it if they really want to.
That’s another thing, too. Girls really need to draw the line and stick to it. People try to get girls to do things that they do and don’t want to do. Girls get talked into things because they’re young and they need money.
You’re known for anal works, but I understand you have an offbeat girl-girl line coming out, similar to your Girl Crazy series for New Sensations. Let’s hear about it.
I’m going to start shooting that in the next couple of months. I’m putting together the cast right now. That’s just really good gonzo. To me, the hook on that is that guys don’t want to see a girl just flipping her tongue over another girl’s pussy. They want to see fingers and toys and open pussies and shit.
I’m catering to a guys’ market, but it’s funny, lesbians like it as well. I get emails from lesbians that like it. There’s a lesbian website that gives me great reviews.
I love doing girl-girl. The reason why I started it was that I used to hate girl-girl to death. From being on a Wicked or Sin City set, these girl-girls are just so fucking lame. The girls have one finger in their pussy and flicking their little tongue, “Oh, ah.” Come on! Bring it girls! You like each other? I don’t work with girls who don’t like girls. It’s a requirement. And I can tell because I know the girls. There’s no faking going on.
What else are you working on?
One thing I’m highlighting now is a new movie called Anal Showdown. It’s kind of like a boxing match. The girls do a solo, a girl-girl, and then a boy-boy-girl anal, and the viewer has to pick who they like. I’m going to have people vote. I have a website based around it. I’m going to try to get the viewer interested in the outcome of the actual project. And the girl who wins gets extra money. I give away stuff from the movies, like their clothes and the toys and stuff like that for the viewers. I’m trying to make it a little fun.
I’m going to be putting together a CD-Rom of music, because I do all the music on my movies. I’m putting together a soundtrack with a movie, so there’ll be a CD and a DVD inside the package. The website should be up now, JonniDarkkoXXX.com.
